The love affair he had with Claire was a “forgery” built or painted by Billy the artist who bids on things for Oldman. The mechanic who forged the automaton to intrigue Oldman guided him through the steps of falling in love. The mechanic and Claire made Oldman believe that he was helping her, even to the point of her recovery where the guys they hired beat him up and Claire magically came out of the villa. Every step Oldman took was part of a ruse to make him believe that he had fallen in love and helped Claire recover. Everything was perfectly forged all to get Claire inside Oldman’s vault of paintings. It is true the only thing real in the affair between Oldman and Claire is Oldman’s feelings of love, after the betrayal and theft you can see Oldman go into a state of bewilderment BUT he recovers. The line in the movie where Oldman describes forgeries is the key I think. He says the forger always betrays himself putting something of his or her own in the work of art. From my perspective the “Night and Day” cafe where everything is mechanical and made of gears at the end, I think this is Claire’s mark on the forgery. She mentions the cafe or restaurant specifically. I say he is there knowing she will eventually show. Knowing this is her mark her mistake on the forgery, and he is hoping to catch her and get his vengeance.

Overmoneyed rubes should watch that movie so that they can see just how elaborate a trap cons can set. Such criminals often study a victim months or even years in advance and the affection they show is nothing more than a near perfect forgery intended to win their trust…
