Re narcissists emulate and copy: It is almost terrifying how they do it. They are just some sort of mix between a sponge and mirror. Absorbing every single word you say and emulating/mirroring what u just said and did. And some times it is done straight away, right after u did/said something. Like in your face and u look at them & say ‘Is there an echo here? Cos someone is repeating verbatim what I just said!’

Indeed and the reason why they do it is two-fold. They need to create a mask of likeable normalcy as the OP said but they also do it to lower their target’s guard via mirroring:
