are staircases (especially spiral staircases + staircases where you can’t see the top and/or bottom) used in any kind of programming? whenever we see an image of a staircase, one of our child alters fronts and we’re not sure why. we think it may have to do with our programming.

Yes, staircases and spiral stairs are used in programming.  Two examples Schroeder’s staircase and Penrose stairs.

They can represent infinity, as in the endless staircase (impossible object). 

Staircases can be found in Labyrinth programming.
