Sultry Los Angeles songstress Evalyn plans on releasing a new EP named Salvation on September 28th, which is much cause for celebration in our book considering our zeal for her music these past couple of years. She stokes the flames of our excitement with her latest single, Big Bad City, a sleek smoldering alt pop anthem with chiseled production and much guitar churning passion. Big Bad City was inspired by the big city grit of Los Angeles. Like that muggy city of seedy greed-filled fame, much renowned for being the resting place of ill-fated dreams, there’s a smoggy heat to the cinematic and splendorous song. Despite its grandeur, there’s a sadcore fatalism to Big Bad City that echoes Lana Del Rey, but more stately and regal. In creating her new EP, Evalyn aimed to amplify the sense of self possession, both in her elaborate approach on production and in the message at the heart of the release. “One of the central themes is the idea of trying to find something to save you, whether it’s religion or a cult or anything else you might worship,” Evalyn says. Interestingly enough, each track on her EP will examine one of the seven deadly sins. So not only is it going to be a sonically enthralling treat, but there’s a cerebral depth to it all too, which is exactly the kind of art I love. Expansive Big Bad City is quite the engrossing preview, a magnificent and glorious song with dark stormy undertones. Stream/purchase Big Bad City, here, while we look forward to Evalyn’s Salvation EP.
