For many, the spiritual life can be a struggle in the beginning; often, the awakening souls are surrounded by those who still sleep, and they find that those closest to them – those they have relied on for so long, family and friends – no longer understand them. Perhaps worst still, the awakening souls struggle to understand themselves; there’s no one book that can guide you through this period of turmoil, and much of the information can be conflicting: one spiritual teacher might tell you to kill the ego, another that there is no ego, whilst a third says you merely need to tame it… and just to add to the confusion, all three messages resonate deep within you. Yet, despite it all, you work hard to live in this moment, to live from the heart and you begin to build the foundations of a spiritual life; and all the while this is going on, you’re trying to exist in a materialistic world, to survive in an environment that can often be toxic and self-defeating. Your worth is still measured in terms of material wealth, whilst you’re still expected to contribute to an unjust system where we must fight for human rights and equality – whilst knowing we should be building a new society where equal rights are an integral part of the design – and people, oftentimes those closest to you, just wish you’d stop going on about these things and just accept “reality”. You can feel so lonely at times, but you stay strong and keep returning to your centre, keeping meditating, practicing yoga, or chanting, or whatever it is you do to bring you into this moment, and your vibe begins to attract your tribe… and suddenly you realise that you’ve never been alone, that you are a part of something that is bigger than anything you’ve ever gone up against before. And suddenly there is no struggle, and you begin to flow with life, to be one with with being; and you come to understand that those who are struggling to live a materially established life, will live a life of eternal struggle: there will always be a bigger house they must live in, a faster car they must drive, nicer clothes, finer restaurants to dine in, grander hotels to stay in… they live for a future that can’t be sated.
