Sherlock creator Steven Moffat has slammed online trolls threatening the show’s stars.
The TV boss revealed he had also received death threats via social media after actress Amanda Abbington said she was forced to call police over shocking online abuse.
Speaking at the TV Choice Awards, he told The Sun: “It’s got to be sorted out – people can’t just go around making these threats.
“I think the internet, and things like Twitter and Facebook, should be policed a hell of a lot better.
“People making these threats should face the consequences very fast and very severely. Then it will stop.”
His comments came after an anonymous blogger posted a shocking message to actress Amanda and her partner Martin Freeman, who also stars in Sherlock, which included a picture of a baseball bat covered in barbed wire.
The horrifying picture was captioned with the words: “Shall we start prepping for a possible funeral?”
Another message referenced their co-star Benedict Cumberbatch and claimed they were giving him a “bad name”.
The message read: “Both Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington are starting to give Benedict and all his fans a bad name! They both seriously just need to shut up and f***ing die already!”
Amanda exposed the vile threats on Twitter by reposting a picture of the blog.
She wrote: “To the coward who’s since shut this blog down. We’ve already informed the police sweetie. They have all the info.”
Fans were quick to offer their support to the couple, who have been together for 15 years.
A source close to the pair said: “This is nothing new to them, but they are not prepared to put up with threats on their life.
“These messages were incredibly sinister and they are well aware of the obsessive nature of a certain number of Benedict fans. Hopefully whoever is behind this will be caught and prosecuted.”

The problem being, who do they think the obsessives are? some nans or all sceptics?
I like AA and MF because they are both good actors. The fact that they’ve never jumped on the ShamWow bandwagon says a lot about their integrity. I am not a ‘Cumberbitch’, I am all skeptic. As a general rule skeptics tend to be a lot more reasonable. They don’t make excuses for BC and they certainly don’t threaten his family or his co-workers. We may criticize some of them but we don’t go after them. I have been targeted, harassed and cyber-stalked by stannies myself! I know many of you also feel secondhand embarrassment at the OTT behavior exhibited by the stannies. I have never demanded a selfie, a autograph or forced interaction. If I approve of the person’s work I may ask for an autograph provided they are not indisposed. I treat all the celebs I’ve run into in much the same way. They are human beings like you and me, only that they happen to be in the public eye.
