To NorCal Anon. I’m the one who insists she’s a bad singer, and here’s why. On the recordings, her singing is breathy, cautious, and listless. This is how people sing when they don’t have much range or breath support or pitch control. They rely on sounding “pretty” and inoffensive to the ear, taking no chances. There is no musicality there, only image. And the live recording showed that she’s off-key most of the time. I don’t think Auto-Tune was used, only helpful engineering/editing. 1/2

NorCal response 2/2: And this offends me, because there are many professional singers, IMO (esp women) who get by on looks and image with that little-girl voice. This was especially true in “indie” music beginning about 20 yrs ago. For some reason (don’t forget her connections!), this was enough to get Sophie this album deal. So, no, I’m not going to give her credit for being a pretty good/not bad singer. As usual, she’s been given breaks and lauded far beyond what her accomplishments warrant.

TFOE: Why don’t people judge for themselves!

Here’s SH’s The Isis Project—By: Guy Chambers & Sophie Hunter (2005). The CD she did in french, in a studio.

And SH singing live at The 4th Orgasmatron in 2010 at Favela Chic.

There was no ‘album deal’, it was a Guy Chambers album – HIS album – and he hired her to sing.

This prolly inspired her to release a couple more in English, but of course, it went nowhere. I agree with nonny.

Indeed. GC’s first choice was Audrey Tautou IIRC. AT was unavailable so he had to settle for SH…and tons of voice editing.
