I do not read to become more intelligent,
I read to ignore a little less.
I do not read to be a more complex person,
I read to be someone more simple.
I do not read to enrich my vocabulary,
I read so that I may not be indebted to my tongue.
I do not read hundreds of books
I read the same book many times.
I do not read to feel fulfilled,
I read to make myself feel
I do not read to say that I read,
I read to hear other voices in my silence.
I do not read to forget reality,
I read to transform mine.
I do not read to escape into other stories,
I read stories so they become a part of mine.
I do not read to judge what others read,
I read to question what I read
I do not read to believe myself better than others,
I read to be better than myself.
I do not read because I will be a better person,
I read simply because I read.

Juana Inés de la Cruz

What Interest Have You, World, in Persecuting Me?

What interest have you, World, in persecuting me?
Wherein do I offend you, when all I want
Is to give beauty to my mind
And not my mind to beautiful things?

I do not care for goods or treasures;
and so am always more content
To endow my thoughts with riches
Rather than riches with my thoughts.

And I esteem not looks, which age
Takes away in civil stealth,
Nor am I impressed by wealth,

Holding that in truth ‘tis better
To expend the vanities of life
Than to expend one’s life in vanities.
