The family has appeared on the Forbes list of the 400 richest Americans. Although the Bing name is not as well-known as Chandler or Broad, California is dotted with evidence of the family’s generosity, from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Leo S. Bing Theater to an array of programs at Stanford University, where Peter Bing used to be chairman of the board of trustees.

Bing & Bing was one of the most important apartment real estate developers in New York City in the early 20th century.

The firm was founded by Leo S. Bing and his brother, Alexander M. Bing. The brothers often worked with the architect Emery Roth[1] on buildings like The Alden, at 82nd and Central Park West, and the Southgate complex of apartment houses on the south side of 52nd Street between First Avenue and the East River. In 1985, the heirs of the Bings[2] sold most of their buildings to a partnership led by Martin J. Raynes.

Alexander Bing (1879 – 1959) was also an author, artist, art patron, and philanthropist. Bing was the first president of the Regional Planning Association of America, and the primary source of funding for the City Housing Corporation, the organization behind the development of housing landmark Sunnyside Gardens in Astoria, Queens, and the planned community of Radburn, New Jersey. Late in life, Bing also started the Friends of the Whitney Museum of American Art, with David Sholinger and Roy Neuberger.

Bing Nursery School opened its doors in 1966, and was constructed as a laboratory school with a grant from the National Science Foundation and a gift from Dr. Peter S. Bing and his mother, Mrs. Anna Bing Arnold. Once described as “a national treasure” by Professor Emerita of Psychology Eleanor E. Maccoby, Bing’s mission was to provide a laboratory setting for research where faculty members and graduate students can conduct research in child development, to provide a sound educational environment for young children, and to teach undergraduate and graduate students about young children through observation and experience in the classroom. Bing has since established a fourth mission: to partner with both parents and educators in helping to improve the lives of young children and their families through the Kordestani Family Programs for Parents and Educators.

Since 1949, the Department of Psychology had maintained a laboratory nursery school at the Stanford Village housing complex (where SRI International is currently located). In the early 1960’s the department added the Escondido Village Nursery School in a cottage across the street from Bing’s current location.

Behind the greatness of LACMA stand many great women

For more than 30 years, a plaque near the entranceway to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Ahmanson Building greeted visitors. “This museum was conceived by Norton Simon and Richard F. Brown, director …" the inscription began. A list of founding trustees followed, including savings-and-loan titan Howard Ahmanson and department store mogul Edward W. Carter.

As the museum celebrates its 50th anniversary on Wilshire Boulevard, however, a look at LACMA’s early history reveals key female supporters and staffers who worked at the institution’s earlier incarnation as the Museum of History, Science and Art in Exposition Park. After 1961, when the art department broke away from the history and science museum to form its own institution, the job of helping the new LACMA acquire and shape its collection was led by two longtime female donors, Anna Bing Arnold and Camilla Chandler Frost.
